Stanley Cup Finals 2011: Boston Catches the Bruins Fever

The last time the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup was nearly four decades ago… During this time, Richard Nixon was still in office and gas was less than a dollar. Way back in 1972, Bruins fans were ecstatic as they beat the New York Rangers 4 games to 2, bringing the Stanley Cup to home to Boston. Since then it’s been pretty quiet during hockey season in the Boston area.

That was until recently… Within the past couple of weeks, Bruins fans woke up from their losing streak hibernation to support their beloved the team as they moved onto the Stanley Cup Finals against the Vancouver Canucks. As almost every Bostonian knows by now – the last time the Bruins entered the Stanley Cup Finals was nearly 21 years ago, in the year 1990. It’s been said that only one of the current players on the entire Bruins roster, Mark Recchi, was alive for the last Stanley Cup title…

Fun Under 21 in Boston

Once the sun goes down, Boston practically becomes a playground for the over-21 crowd. If you’re under 21 like me, you’ve probably spent countless Friday and Saturday nights scouring the city for cool hangout spots that don’t require a fake ID. Even though it may seem like the city has no love for us, I’ve found 10 fun places around Boston that welcome the 18+ crowd on weekend nights.

Get down, get down! If you love to dance and party, hit up Paper at Harper’s Ferry in Allston. Every Thursday night, the club packs the floor with students from all over the city for their 18+ dance parties. As promised on the club’s Myspace page, you could hear any kind of music at Paper: Indie, electro, rock, pop, club hits, bangers… Anything that makes you lose control!

EarthFest presented by Whole Foods features local and national bands, such as OK Go, Sponge, and Atomic Ton. The “green” celebration is completely free and includes the concerts, environmentally friendly product giveaways, and representation from several non-profit organizations. Some of the sponsors include VitaminWater, Sabra, and Odwalla, and the festival even includes a “Kid’s Planet” feature.

Boston Summer Bucket List

Wahoo! It’s almost summertime! If you are sticking around Boston this summer, it is time to say goodbye to textbooks and hello to flip flops and sun rays. Here’s my Boston Summer 2011 Bucket List, full of things to keep you entertained around the city when you’re not busy lounging.

1. The annual Boston Chowderfest is an all-you-can-eat buffet of, you guessed it, clam chowdah! For only $12, sample New England chowder from the city’s best restaurants. It’s also a competition between restaurants in the area for the best soup. The event is on July 3rd in a gated area on City Hall Plaza.

10 Free Things To Do in Boston

Just ‘cuz we’re broke college students doesn’t mean we can’t have fun in the city! Here’s a list of 10 totally free, enjoyable things to do around Boston.

1. Climb the Bunker Hill Monument–  “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes!” Check out the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even trek up 294 stairs to the top of the monument for unparalleled views of Boston!

Ah, summer. The warm weather, sunshine and freedom from classes and homework makes the possibilities seem endless. All through college, I’ve had friends do some incredible things – from getting grants to work with human rights groups in Africa, leading rafting trips in Costa Rica, interning at some of the biggest companies in the world, and, of course, the few die-hard returning camp counselors. As summer quickly approaches, I’m sure a lot of you have been hot on the pursuit of the perfect summer plans, whether it be securing the perfect resume-builder or finding an amazing destination.
